On track 和 on the track 字面上的差別一目了然，類似的我們并不少見，如 out of wood 和 out of the woods，然而它們實際的意思卻截然不同，那麼 on track 和 on the track 哪個才是「在軌道上」等意思呢？

其實英語中類似區別的介詞短語數不勝數，它們都大同小異；有定冠詞 the 修飾的多數都是「具體」的特指，也就是位置關系，此時介詞后面的名詞多為地點或位置等名詞；而沒有定冠詞等其他成分修飾的，多半表示的是一種「抽象」的狀態或方式等，例如：

You can get there just as cheaply by plane.

你坐飛機去那里也同樣便宜。

此時的 plane 和 by 之間沒有任何修飾成分，因此 by plane 表示的是「抽象」的坐飛機的運輸方式，又如：

He stood by the plane catching a glimpse of the sublime sunset.

此時的 plane 和 by 之間定冠詞 the 修飾，因此 by the plane 表示的是位置關系，表示他的位置是靠近飛機的。

由此可見，on track 和 on the track 的區別也類似，后者有定冠詞 the 修飾，特指某條具體的軌道或跑道等，那麼 on the track 就是在特定的「位置」上，也就是「在軌道上」等意思，例如：

There are many manholes on the track.

軌道上有許多檢修孔。

特指在某條道路上有很多檢修孔。類似的還有 on the road，on the way 等等，它們都可以表示在具體的某條路或道上，例如：

The children are playing with a ball on the road.

孩子們在路上玩球。

Our car broke down on the way to work， so we were late for the meeting.

我們的車在上班的路上拋錨了，所以我們開會遲到了。

此類的介詞短語所表示的「路」有時會被抽象使用，如 on the track of sth，意為「追蹤，追查」等，還有 on the road to 或 on the way to 等等，意為」在……中或路上」等，例如：
